comedy

I write sketches about anything and everything, sometimes with people, and often in my head when I’m standing in a long supermarket queue.

Pitch – The Big Footie Fundraiser, London, 2023

What happens when you cross a cabaret clown who knows almost nothing about football with an Edinburgh Fringe fundraiser for a queer football-based play? ...No, really, what happens? Simply The Jest took on the persona of the lonely football, who explains the off-side rule. It may or may not have been correct.

Top Of The Chops, Brighton, 2023

For a friend's fundraiser, Simply The Jest clowned heartily to a Dolly Parton jukebox musical, where our beloved country and western star accidentally unleashes her dark alter ego – the murderous Jolene.

Soho Theatre Cabaret & Drag Lab, London, 2022

With the 2022 Soho Theatre Cabaret & Drag Lab troupe, I brought to life my cabaret clown persona Simply The Jest. I performed their debut, described as “terrifying yet brilliant”, at Soho Downstairs. Can be (and have been!) brought back on stage with the right question.

Soho Theatre Sketch Comedy Lab, London, 2021

With the 2021 Soho Theatre Sketch Comedy Lab troupe, I wrote and performed a variety of sketches in front of an audience as part of a sharing showcase at Soho Theatre.

And Then She Said A Funny Thing, London, 2015

Extreme Sports – Ever thought humdrum sports, such as golf, tennis, and netball, could use a little zhuzh? Me too! I wrote this sketch, which was recorded live at Clapham Omnibus in London for the Crooked Pieces’ pilot podcast episode

PantSoc Presents: Pantohontas, York, 2014

The story of Pocahontas pastiched through the lens of musical pantomime, parodied well enough not to be sued by the Big Mouse’s lawyers. Daughter of the chief and poker champion of the tribe Poker Hontas must outwit and defeat the trophy-hunting John Smith in a glorious game – of poker, of course! A team of excellent writers and I collaborated on composing this script, and I also took part in editing it.

Jurassic Park Reduced, York, 2013

A reimagining of Michael Crichton’s classic brought to life with music, puppets, and a print-out of Samuel L. Jackson’s face attached to a fishing line. Jackson was sadly unable to attend rehearsals due to scheduling conflicts. I co-wrote and co-produced this masterpiece, it was a sell-out hit. I mean, the show was a free event but the venue was at full capacity and people were being turned away at the door.
